I didn’t start Casa de Wing because it was easy. I started it because nobody else was going to build it for me.
Here’s the part nobody tells you when you launch a small cigar brand. The big companies aren’t just bigger. They’re everywhere. They’re on the shelf at every shop you walk into. They’re in the magazines. They sponsor the events. They’ve got sales reps who’ve known shop owners for twenty years. And you’re the new guy with a box of cigars and a story.
That’s the reality of building Casa de Wing. Every single day.
No Ads, No Shortcuts
Most brands can throw money at Facebook or Google and buy their way to eyeballs. Not us. Tobacco is banned from paid advertising on Meta, Google, TikTok, pretty much everywhere that matters. So there’s no shortcut. No boosted post is going to save us.
That means everything we build has to be earned. Every person who finds Casa de Wing found it because someone told them about it, because they read something we wrote, or because they searched for it and we showed up. There’s no other way in. It’s slower. It’s harder. But it’s also real, and I’ll take real over rented traffic any day.
Shelf Space Is a Fight
Walk into most cigar shops and the humidor is already full. Full of brands with distribution deals, full of names people recognize, full of boxes that have been sitting there building relationships for years. Asking a shop to make room for something new is asking them to bet on you over something proven.
I’ve sent outreach to shops all over the country. Some don’t answer. Some do, and that’s a good day. But every yes is hard won, not handed to us because of a name or a budget. When a shop like Privada or The Cigar Vault says yes, that means something, because they didn’t have to.
Being Small Means Being Honest
The upside of being small is I get to make every decision myself. The blend, the band, the box, the story behind it. Nothing gets watered down by a committee trying to please everyone. The Ascent is the cigar it is because I wanted it that way, not because a focus group told me to.
Big companies chase trends and margins. I get to chase what I actually believe makes a good cigar. That’s not a marketing line, that’s just the truth of building something small. You live and die by your own decisions, and honestly, I’d rather it be that way.
The Veteran in All of This
I didn’t build this brand around being a veteran because it sounded good on a label. It’s just who I am, and it shapes how I run this thing. You learn in the military that showing up matters more than talking about showing up. You learn that small teams can outwork big ones if they’re disciplined about it. That’s the mindset behind Casa de Wing. We’re not trying to out-market the big guys. We’re trying to outwork them.
Why This Still Works
Being small in an industry full of giants isn’t a disadvantage if you play it right. People are tired of brands that feel manufactured by a marketing department. They want to know who actually made the thing they’re smoking. They want a story that’s true, not one that was focus-grouped into existence.
That’s what a boutique cigar brand can give people that a big company never will. A name behind the name. A person who answers the emails. A blend that exists because someone cared enough to get it right, not because it tested well with a panel.
Casa de Wing is never going to outspend the big cigar companies. That was never the plan. The plan is to outlast them by being real, by earning trust one shop and one smoker at a time, and by never losing sight of why we started this in the first place.
If you’ve smoked The Ascent and know what I mean, you already get it. If you haven’t yet, that’s alright. We’ll still be here when you’re ready.
